Yes, with only four more days left in the NBA regular season, that smell of playoff basketball is starting to fill the air. I am so excited, I can't wait until April 22 when the playoffs officially start. There are teams still fighting to spots and trying to get positions. Detroit and Dallas have wrapped up the top seeds in the East and West conferences respectively.
Remember that team that everyone picked as a possible team to represent the East in the Finals? Not Detroit, Miami, or Cleveland, but Chicago. They are currently the 2 seed and fighting with Cleveland for that right. They struggled early in the season, but have come on strong down the important back stretch of the season and are looking sharp to make a run in the playoffs. They also hold the best home record of any team in the Eastern Conference, so watch out for the "baby" bulls in this years postseason.
The hot team in the West in my opinion would have to be the San Antonio Spurs. They have got their players healthy and are playing like the Spurs of old and are giving the Suns worries for the 2 seed in the West. I don't think they will be the 2 seed, but whatever seed they are, I don't think any team will want to face them, even the Dallas Mavericks. I think we all know what the Spurs can do wants Playoff time comes around. Especially with a three time Finals Champ and MVP in forward Tim Duncan.
On the other hand, MVP candidate Kobe Bryant's Lakers are now at 40-40 and holding on to the 7 seed by only a half of a game over city mate LA Clippers and the surprise team Golden State Warriors. They have currently lost four straight games and if they didn't make the playoffs, Kobe could pretty much kiss another MVP chance goodbye after another good scoring season and scoring title.
Just announced yesterday, Georgetown Star Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert will enter their names into this years NBA draft. But, they won't sign agents until after the deadline so they will still have NCAA eligibility to return if they wanted to next season. Personally, I think Green is ready for the NBA, he has got some talent. Hibbert could probably return for his Senior season to polish his stills because they are plenty of forwards and big men in this year's draft already that will probably shut down his possibilities of being drafted by a team that would use him. I wish the both of them the best of luck and congrats on their impressive run taking Georgetown to the Final Four.

Kobe IS the MVP. He just dropped another fitty to lock-up the playoff spot. He has callouses on his back from carrying this team. People may not like him as a person, but in term of value to your team, you can't identify a more valuable player.
Now regarding hot teams....What is that sound? Oh...it is the sounds of those hot Spurs being dowsed by the hotter and more complete Mavs. Timmy D got ejected for laughing. How crazy is that? But the statement remains, the Mavs are the team to beat in these playoffs. They have one of the best (if not the best) coaches around and they have a sure-to-be hall of fame 7-footer who can do more than the nearly every other 7-footer in the league....Timmy D included. There are always crazy things that happen in the playoffs, but with my Pacers firmly in the Greg Oden pool (and yes...I say Oden because we could use him more than we can use Durant I think...especially if we send O'Neal packing), the Mavs are my team this year.
BTW, MJ, interesting story about Robinson. Had no idea they were looking at a pitcher first. Maybe that is one of the reasons Robinson was so humble about the whole thing. As I've heard many times...he wasn't about being a "cause" just about being a ball player. I really do wish I liked baseball.
Final comment: UNC in 08? So let's see they are returning a team that choked away their post-season hopes. Hmmm....sounds like a team to build on. Or is the idea that most of their competition is losing players so they figure if they don't really have to compete they will have a good shot? Ok...I'm just punking on UNC. They are obviously well coached and have the talent. And with a little maturity, they will definitely be a force. But don't rule out my Zags! One year...the Final Four will be theirs!
